New Head Coach - Stuart Edgar

As Kilmarnock VC prepared for the start of the 2009/10 season, Gordon Welsh decided it was time to step down as Head Coach of the Club and Stuart Edgar was selected to replace him.

Gordon Welsh had been Head Coach for several years, after replacing Jim McKenna, and the club had enjoyed success in both the league and cup during his spell in charge. During Gordon's last season in charge, the 1st team finished second in National League Division 1 and the 2nd team won the 3rd division and were finalists in the Scottish Plate.

Stuart is a current senior Scottish Internationalist with over 90 caps to his name and he has played for Kilmarnock for over 10 years. He is full of enthusiasm for his new role at the club and is keen to push the club forward during a time of change. He has added Euan Duncan and Stewart Caldwell to his first team squad for the new season, as well as promoting Colin Giles from the 2nd team.

Stuart ran the club's first pre-season training camp for three days at the start of August and this prepared the players well for pre-season competition. Kilmarnock participated in the UK School Games Cup, which was a preparation event for the UKSG's teams. Killie emerged undefeated playing some outstanding volleyball.

Next on the pre-season calendar was the John Kurtz Memorial Tournament, which was held at the end of August. Once again Edgar did not have his full squad at his disposal but Killie went on to beat Edinburgh Jets 3-0 and Team Fife 3-2, to retain the JKM for the 4th consecutive year.

Coach Edgar's final preparation event for the 2009/10 season was the Dynamo Cup hosted by City of Edinburgh. Edgar had to juggle his squad for the 2 day event but after a slow start against Leeds Carnegie, the team went from strength to strength. Unfortunately the team were unable to register a victory but there was solid performances from Edgar himself, youngster Mark Lawson in the middle and setter Giles as he prepares for his first season as the first choice setter.

Dynamo Cup Results

Kilmarnock 0-2 Leeds Carnegie, Kilmarnock 1-2 City of Glasgow Ragazzi, Kilmarnock 1-2 Utrecht, Kilmarnock 0-2 City of Edinburgh.

Kilmarnock are looking forward to the new season with optimism and are hopeful a change at the top will bring a new impetus to the club. Everyone at the club wishes Stuart all the best in his new role.
