Meet the Stars - Brian Green

Brian Green is another long serving member of Kilmarnock Volleyball Club. Brian started with Magnum VC and then has spent 30 years playing for Kilmarnock. He is unique in that he has played in the same team as both his sons at Kilmarnock in recent years. (Callum & Alistair) Hopefully Brian has a few years yet left in the old body!

Started playing in 1976 as part of school team in tournament to celebrate the opening of the Magnum Centre in Irvine.

Only ever played for Magnum (2 years) and Kilmarnock (30 years).Tennis for Kilmaurs T.C. and occasional golfer.

Occupation: Vice Dean & Senior Lecturer

Best Sporting Moment:

Tough to answer but here’s a few:
Playing for GB at Universiade in Edmonton 1983.
Playing for Scotland.
Kilmarnock in Europe 1995/96.
Playing in same team as sons.
Old Guys International: Scotland v. England.

Winning (and keeping winning) trophies with Kilmarnock.

Sporting Hero & why:

Roger Federer – brilliant and consistent.

Worst/most embarrassing sporting moment:

Most embarrassing: Forgetting to put clock forward on day of Scottish Cup Final at Meadowbank. Kept team and supporters’ bus, including town Provost, waiting – only for an hour though!
Worst: Scotland losing really badly to England in my first international at the Magnum Centre.

Favourite film & why:

Anything deep, meaningful and intellectually stimulating - e.g. Indiana Jones or James Bond.

Hate scary films.

Favourite sport to watch:

Tennis at Wimbledon.

What do you do when not playing volleyball?

Work, try to spend time at home and train.

Anything to add:

Sport, volleyball in particular, has been significant and influential in all aspects of my life. Playing for Kilmarnock has been, and remains, challenging and demanding. High standards are set and full commitment is expected. This has been at the heart of the club’s success and will ensure that during the current transition the club can regain top spot in Scotland and once again begin to consider playing in Europe.
