Pentland NUVOC 2 v 3 Kilmarnock

A wet Thursday saw Kilmarnock take a trip through to Holyrood High in Edinburgh to play NUVOC in a re-arranged fixture.  Again, without certain key players, the team was jumbled to give the 7 men the best chance to win.

A slow start definitely kicked Kilmarnock into gear as we started playing at our tempo and game rather than NUVOC’s. Brain Green seemed to take the lead role on this night and it was apparent that he was hitting extremely well, killing almost everything he hit. The passing unit started to function delightfully making Grant Young’s job easier, accessing both sides of the court and the middle was involved making there blockers work harder. A combonation of hitting from McGuire and strong blocking from the middles Gaw and Bryson took Kilmarnock from 1-0 down to 2-1 up in sets.

Back in action for the first time in months was Barry Chambers, who filled in the libero. This added to the team’s defensive presence and the ball was coming back off the floor more often than not. However, an easy start to the 4th set for Kilmarnock lead to a false sense of security that let NUVOC back into the game and eventually won a closely contested third set.

It all came down to the fifth set, which started for Kilmarnock very well, going 4-0 with very little work. After the changeover, we continued our strong play throughout and went onto win 15-12.

Kilmarnock’s biggest challenge comes this weekend when they face the Division one side Dundee in the Cup.
