Kilmarnock travelled to the capital this week, to play City Of Edinburgh in the Top Team’s Cup. After losses to City Of Glasgow Ragazzi and Glasgow Mets already in the Top Team’s Cup, Kilmarnock had to beat the current league leaders to stand a chance of qualifying for the knock-out rounds.
Killie took a while to get into a rhythm in the first set. After a slow start Kilmarnock managed to compete towards the end of the set, with Neil McCallum and Gordon Welsh hitting well in the outside hitter position. Despite a late surge, the Kilmarnock fight-back came too late and they never recovered from the poor start, soon going down 25-14 in the first set.

Neil has adjusted well to his swing hitter role.
Although the outcome of the first set was poor for Kilmarnock, there late comeback in the first set gave them the momentum they needed to start strong in the second. Player/coach Stuart Edgar was leading from the front with a series of impressive blocks. Despite Killie’s quality, Edinburgh stayed in touch, and made a decisive attack towards the end of the set, eventually taking it 25-21.
Kilmarnock’s spirits were damaged some what by the second set defeat. Although they were never really out of touch in the third set, they went down 25-19, City Of Edinburgh taking the match 3-0 in the process.
Kilmarnock II were also in action in the Scottish Cup, beating Volero, 3-0, an impressive result considering the team was down to the bare bones, with several players unable to play due to work commitments.
