National League Game 5

Kilmarnock 3 v 2 Glasgow Mets

Kilmarnock welcomed current league champions Glasgow Mets to Mearns Castle High School for their latest league game.  Glasgow Mets were in good form leading up to the game, being undefeated so far in the league, whereas Kilmarnock have been going through a rough patch in the season, after losing their last four matches in league and Top Teams Cup.

The home team started strongly, with Stuart Edgar and Stewart Caldwell making some good plays through the middle, and quality setting and serving from Colin Giles meaning Kilmarnock won the race to both technical time-outs.  Soon after another strong run of jump serving took Killie to an impressive 25-14 first set win.

Colin Giles set & served well.

Kilmarnock went into the second set full of confidence from an impressive first set performance.  However, as has so often been the case with Killie this season, they took their foot off the gas and allowed Mets back into the game.  The champions took full advantage and strolled to at 25-14 second set victory.

After a stern talking to before the third set, Kilmarnock got their act together and started strongly, again thanks to some quality setting from Giles.  They had regained the form of the first set and before, won the third 25-16, with some strong hitting from Neil McCallum and Euan Duncan.

Euan Duncan was in fine form.

Kilmarnock managed to carry momentum into the fourth set and, unlike the second set, got off to a good start.  Mets however used their superior experience to grind their way back into the set.  The lead changed hands several times, but in the end Mets took the set 25-20.

In the deciding set, coach, Edgar, elected to shuffle things around a little and put himself hitting through the outside.  The change worked, as Kilmarnock ended up taking the set 15-12, thanks to some superb finishing from captain, Gordon Welsh, and win the match 3-2.

Kilmarnock II were also in action against Glasgow Mets II, winning   4-1.  This win meant the Kilmarnock second team have gone a year undefeated in league competitions.
