Kilmarnock Blaze played Dundee at St Josephs Academy in this weeks league match. After a couple of bad results, Kilmarnock were looking to get back to the form from the start of the season with a win against the newly promoted Dundee.
The first set started with neither side being able to build much of a lead. However, some impressive blocking from young middle blocker Mark Lawson and a run of unreturned jump serves from player/coach Stuart Edgar put Killie in a commanding position. Dundee had no response to a much improved Blaze from last week, and Kilmarnock soon took the first set 25-16.
The Blaze took their foot off the gas at the start of the second set, and Dundee took an early lead. After going in at the second technical timeout 16-12 down, setter, Colin Giles put together a string of powerful serves to square the set and then his quality setting helped give his team a lead going into the end of the set. In the end it was captain Gordon Welsh who won the set with some smart hitting.
In the final set, Edgar took himself off, for John Hollis, however Kilmarnock were not weakened in any way by the change. Both Hollis and Euan Duncan were making the difference in the absence of Edgar, showing the depth of the Blaze squad. Once again, Dundee had no answer for Killie’s play and the third set finished 25-17, and giving them a 3-0 lead and putting their season back on track.
In the other game of the day Kilmarnock II beat Bellshill Cardinals 4-1.
Kilmarnock Blaze would like to welcome anyone interested to their recreational volleyball sessions, Thursday evenings from 7-8 at St Josephs Academy, £2 per person, no previous experience needed.
