Team Fife 1 Kilmarnock 3

Kilmarnock made the drive to the east coast this week, for their game against Team Fife.  Killie managed to win a closely contested match against Fife in pre-season, however, made the journey knowing they had a tough game in store.

The Ayrshire team went into the game with a couple of changes from their last game against Edinburgh Jets, Euan Duncan coming in for Neil McCallum at off-setter, and Angus Mitchell replacing Mark Lawson in the middle blocker position.

Kilmarnock made an ideal start to the game, taking an early lead in the first set thanks to a run of serves from Duncan, taking them to the first technical time-out 8-4 ahead.  The minute break benefited the home team as they made a superb come back, and went into the second technical time-out 16-15 ahead.  Fife then went from strength to strength in the first set, eventually taking it 25-22.

The second set started in a similar manner to the first, with Killie taking an early lead.  However, they managed to keep the lead throughout the set.  Although Fife pulled the score back, there was only going to be one winner in the set, Gordon Welsh carrying his team over the finish line to a 25-21 victory.

Angus Mitchell was dominant in the middle!

Kilmarnock peaked in the third set, with Angus Mitchell dominating through the middle.  The experienced middle blocker managing to rise above the block to put away a series of powerful hits.  Killie quickly took the set with a very convincing 25-14 score.

The fourth set started in familiar fashion, with Killie taking a commanding lead.  However, before the end, complacency set in and Fife made their way back into the set.  In a close finish, Kilmarnock managed to grind out the victory, again with Angus Mitchell taking the plaudits, taking the set 26-24, and with it, the match.

Kilmarnock’s second team were also in action today, against Pentland NUVOC, and they to managed to go home with a 3-2 victory, thanks to some superb setting from Allan Thomas, and blocking from Steven Jackson.

Steven was outstanding as a blocker.
