National League Game 13

Kilmarnock 3 v 2 Bon Accord

Kilmarnock welcomed Bon Accord to St Joseph’s, for the league game that could settle third and fourth place in the league.  This was a showcase game for Kilmarnock, and around eighty people turned up to watch the match.

Kilmarnock went into the game as slight favourites and got off to the better start early on in the match, making it to the first and second technical timeouts in the lead.  However after, going down 16-12 at the second timeout, Bon Accord then started a fight back, and soon tied the match up at 18-18.  The teams traded points until a run of errors from Killie gifted the set to Bon Accord 25-23.

Kilmarnock, again started stronger in the second set and took an early lead, but the again lacked the killer instinct to shut off the set, and despite some powerful hitting from Angus Mitchell Bon Accord took the lead at the second technical timeout.  It was now Killie’s turn to fight back, and although they pushed it close, Bon Accord went two sets up, taking the second 29-27.

Kilmarnock went into the third set knowing that they could not afford any more mistakes if they were to win the match.  As in the previous two sets they took an early lead, however unlike earlier in the match, they managed to keep there level high enough to build a strong lead, Stuart Edgar and Gordon Welsh keeping their team in the match with impressive passing and hitting.  Bon Accord didn’t have much response to the improvements, and Kilmarnock took the set 25-17.

The momentum was now firmly in the hands of the home team, and the capitalised by, again, taking the lead early in the set.  Bon Accord kept it close, and although Kilmarnock had a lead going into the closing stages of the set, it was by no means comfortable.  Kilmarnock needed the experienced Neil McCallum to step up and take the set 25-23.

The final set, started as every other, with Killie taking an early lead, and when Stewart Caldwell came up with some good blocking and hitting, it put his team in a very strong position.  Bon Accord fought hard to get back into the set, but Kilmarnock managed to hold on and take it 15-13, giving them the match 3-2.

Kilmarnock II were in action against Beacon, and had to come from behind to win the match 3-2.
