Kilmarnock travelled to Edinburgh this week for their latest fixture in the men’s first division. A close match was expected, as the teams occupied the top two positions in the league.
Kilmarnock started promisingly, as some good hitting from Neil McCallum gave them an early lead in the first set. However, the undefeated Edinburgh came back into the set, and after being down 8-5 in the early stages, managed to go into the second technical time-out 16-14 up. After the lead changed hands, Edinburgh never let Killie back into the set, and took it 25-20.
Edinburgh carried their momentum into the second set, and after being ahead all the way through, found themselves 20-14 up in the latter stages. Kilmarnock managed to claw their way back into the set, after a run of six serves by John Hollis, helped along by some impressive blocking by Stewart Caldwell. Killie kept their foot on the gas and fought to a set point, however a series of errors gave Edinburgh the lead and they did not miss the opportunity to win the set, taking it 27-25.
Kilmarnock struggled to make an impact in the third set, as the consistency of passing put Edinburgh in a commanding position, and despite some good serving from Stuart Edgar and Colin Giles they could not fight their way back into it. Edinburgh eventually took the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
