Kilmarnock made the long drive up to Aberdeen on Saturday for their Scottish Cup quarter-final match against Bon Accord. Kilmarnock went into the game in good form, but were playing against a team who came back from 2-0 down to beat City Of Glasgow Ragazzi in their last match.
Although Kilmarnock went into the match confident of a win, it was Bon Accord who made the best start with a strong run of serving and went into the first technical time-out 8-5. Killie came out of the time-out stronger and soon took the lead, thanks to a run of serves from Neil McCallum, however they could not hold the lead and went into the second technical time-out 16-15 down. The two teams traded points, until Bon Accord had a run of serves that finished the set 25-21.
Kilmarnock went into the second set with new vigour. They stormed into the lead and were 16-9 up by the second technical timeout, thanks to a run of powerful jump serving from Colin Giles. However their play seemed complacent and Bon Accord made a superb comeback to go 20-19 ahead. Although heads were down, the experience of Stuart Edgar led the team to take the set 25-22.
The third set was close all the way through, with the lead changing hands several times. A series of strong blocks from Gordon Welsh gave Killie a small lead at the end of the set, and Euan Duncan stepped up to the line to serve out the set 26-24.
There was a similar story in the fourth set with neither team managing to build a strong lead. Stewart Caldwell put in a couple of strong blocks to keep Killie in the set, and at 24-24 Neil McCallum put a gargantuan hit past the block to give his team a match point. It came down to Gordon Welsh with a superb back court hit to win the set 26-24, and the match 3-1.
Kilmarnock II were also in action against Glasgow Mets, however the First Division Champions proved too strong and ran away with a 3-0 win.
Kilmarnock I will face Glasgow Mets in the Scottish Cup Semi Finals at the Kelvin Hall on Sunday 7th March 2010.
