After their win against Dundee in the league last week, Kilmarnock Blaze played City Of Glasgow Ragazzi this weekend, hoping to build up a run of form before the end of season playoffs.
Kilmarnock couldn’t of got off to a much better start in the first set, with middle blocker Stewart Caldwell scoring a huge kill block in the very first point. This set the tone for the first set, as Killie’s blocking proved too much for City Of Glasgow, with setter Colin Giles alone finishing 5 blocks in the first set. The Blaze were dominant throughout, and quickly finished the set 25-18.
Killie’s momentum continued into the second set, as they again started the much stronger. Gordon Welsh helped his team to build a lead with an impressive run from the service line, putting the Ragazzi passing unit under all kinds of pressure. The Blaze again finished the set off 25-18, Mark Lawson finishing off with a powerful hit through the middle.
The third set did not prove to be quite so easy for Kilmarnock, as the experienced players of City Of Glasgow showed that they were not going to give up easy. However Killie did eventually pull away thanks to the hitting of Euan Duncan and Caldwell, and finished the set 25-20, giving them a 3-0 win.
It was a clean sweep for Kilmarnock as their second team overcame Su Ragazzi II 4-1.
Kilmarnock Blaze would like to welcome anyone interested to their recreational volleyball sessions, Thursday evenings from 7-8 at St Josephs Academy, £2 per person, no previous experience needed.
