Continuing on from the win on Thursday night, Kilmarnock faced their toughest challenge to date, Division One team Dundee. Originally, Dundee were in Division Two which gave Kilmarnock the initial belief that this was a game they could definitely win.
Cautiously, Kilmarnock started the game trading blows with Dundee until a few runs of serve rocked our passing unit and they took the first set. Kilmarnock regrouped with words from Coach Edgar and came out a tactically improved team for the second set. Much to the delight of Edgar and everyone else, the blocking and serving tactics were spot on which allowed Thomas to play around with our offence causing havoc for Dundee.
Again and again, Kilmarnock piled the pressure on Dundee through strong blocking from the middles Mitchell and Bryson, clever and smart hitting from McCallum and McGuire but the defensive touches of stand in libero Gordon Traynor prevailed and turned the game on its head in the third set, at 1-1 set each. Scoring this point took all the momentum from Dundee and added to Kilmarnock, and from there the game was ours. Tactical serving from Gaw took us into a comfortable position for the third set, which we closed out soon after. Eventually the end was near for Kilmarnock in the fourth set, but Killie’s level did not dip, it rose. Rally after rally, Dundee became more desperate which gave Killie the ability to close out the game with a bang.
Semi-finals now loom for the Division 2 side with the opportunity to get Edinburgh, Glasgow Su or their own first team “The Blaze”.
